Introduction

During World War 2 (1939 - 1945), all amateur radio operation was banned, but many members of the general population received technical training in radio and radar. From only nine in 1938, by 1948 there were about fifteen licensed hams (amateur radio operators) in the Geelong area which is about an hour's drive south-west of Melbourne.

A meeting was called, and from there the Geelong Amateur Radio Club (GARC) was formed, with weekly meetings drawing about fifteen to twenty people. The club callsign VK3ATL was received by the end of 1948.
