Amateur Radio On The International Space Station

How To Apply For A School Contact

Information for Australian and New Zealand Schools and Groups

An exciting and unique educational opportunity exists for your school to actively participate in and provide a worthwhile contribution to the worldwide International Space Station (ISS) space education program.

ARISS (Amateur Radio on the International Space Station) in conjunction with the International Space Agencies (NASA, CSA, ESA, JAXA & Roscosmos) are currently seeking applications from schools worldwide to participate in an exciting and educationally rewarding amateur radio experiment.

If your school is selected, students will be provided with a communications window of around 10 minutes duration in which to ask general interest questions of the astronauts or Cosmonauts on board the International Space Station as the ISS orbits -430km above the earth traveling at- 27,000km/hr.

The ARISS radio communications link may in some instances be established with amateur radio equipment (radio transceiver & antenna system) installed at the school, this is commonly referred to as a direct contact however if this is impracticable, communications may also be established via the use of a remote link (using one of the school's dedicated analogue telephone lines) and the use of an ARISS telebridge facility which in simplistic terms is similar to a speaker telephone, which is then linked remotely to one of the worldwide ARISS amateur radio ground stations. The telebridge equipment is usually provided on loan to the school by ARISS, at little or in some cases no cost.

All members of ARISS are fully committed to providing positive educational outcomes for the students and the schools which have been selected to participate in the ARISS program.

ARISS support can be provided in assisting the school to prepare the necessary application paperwork. Once the application has been completed and submitted to the ARISS selection committee for approval, further support can be provided by assisting the school in preparing an effective project execution plan as well as providing sound technical assistance, advice and recommendations based on previous successful ARISS experiences.

If you would like more information how your school can apply to participate in the ARISS program, the application form to be completed is below.
