About the International Amateur Radio Union
Who is the IARU
Created in Paris, France, the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) has been the watchdog and spokesman for Amateur Radio community since 1925. The IARU Constitution has the body in three regions that correspond to those of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The Constitution also provides for an IARU Member Society to serve as the International Secretariat (IS) which is the ARRL. Each region also has a secretariat.
All Member Societies work through their region, with the IARU IS responsible for some coordination, administration and manages some activities. The IARU regions look after their regional matters including attendances at preparatory meetings leading up to the ITU World Radiocommunications Conference (WRC), held about every three years. Each region takes turns with their triennial meeting where Member Societies gather to discuss mutual interests, and receive the latest IARU report.
Worldwide voice of radio amateurs
Amateur Radio is organised to better use the radio spectrum, develop throughout the world and to successfully interact with the agencies responsible for regulating and allocating frequencies. Member Societies work together under the auspices of the IARU.
It is vital that the IARU regions attend the ITU WRC preparatory meetings that are held regionally to discuss primarily the WRC agenda, usually resulting in a view on them.
Most important is the IARU attendance in Region 3 the Asia-Pacific and participation at relevant regional sessions by Dale Hughes VK1DSH. He is well respected among delegates from all radio services. (His reports to the WIA board of directors appears below as a download)
ITU decisions important
The IARU looks after the interests of the Amateur Radio Service and the Amateur Satellite Service at each WRC. While the domestic allocation of frequency allocations is the work of the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), it is very mindful of decisions made by the ITU.
The WIA, part of the IARU, works closely with the ACMA on all issues related to Amateur Radio that are not adopted fairly soon after each WRC, in either the Australian Radiofrequency Spectrum Plan, or amendments to the Radiocommunications Licence Conditions (Amateur Licence) Determination (LCD).
