This is Chris Dimitrijevic VK3FY with this weeks, WIA Board Report
for WIA National News.
The Board of the WIA had a full briefing by Peter Young VK3MV our
delegate who attended and represented the Wireless Institute of
Australia for the week at the IARU Region 3 meeting held in Thailand
Peter advised that principles were established for band planning and
that the proposal by the IARU R3 HF Band plan committee for the 40 metre
band will be sent to a committee before being presented to the other
two region meetings over the next 3 years.
Those elected at the meeting in Thailand for the IARU Region 3
administration for the next 3 years are:-
President: Wisnu Widjaja YB0AZ
Vice-President: Mohd Aris Bernawi 9M2IR
Secretary-Treasurer: Ken Yamamoto JA1CJP
Ordinary Members:
Taro Asao JA1BJI
Jakkree Hantongkom HS1FVL
Dr. Sung-Ki Lee HL1IWD
Oscar Reyes VK3TX
Johnny Siu VR2XMC
This has been WIA Director Chris Dimitrijevic VK3FY.
Further to this the ARRL in their November 14 ARRL letter say that
and I quote. "The conference dealt with a number of routine matters,
notably, the conference harmonized the CW portion of the 40-meter band
plan with the other regions by making 7000 - 7040 kHz CW only."
(Editor VK4BB)
Hi folks! This is Editor-in-Chief of Amateur Radio magazine,
Roger Harrison VK2ZRH.
Youve heard me say something like this before. So, here it comes.
Issue Number 6 of AR magazine rolled off the press at Bairnsdale
last Wednesday, on time and under budget. Next week, the magazine
will be leaping into letterboxes, Post Office Boxes, and local
newsagents across the country. A few even go overseas!
As promised in the last issue, this time we have two 50-year
anniversaries to commemorate.
First up is the amateur satellite AO-7, which is the oldest man-made
satellite still working! It was launched on the 15th of November 1974.
It is older I repeat, older than the two Voyager spacecraft, both
of which were launched in 1977. The crux of the AO-7 story is that the
satellite was conceived, developed, and constructed in home workshops
and basements by radio hams across Australia, Canada, Germany, and
America. AO-7 carried a range of radio science and space engineering
innovations that were later adopted widely by other spacecraft built by
aerospace companies and organisations.
AO-7 50 years and still doing its thing.
Dont miss our feature, written by those involved
Rick Matthews VK5BGN, with Jan King VK4GEY, W3GEY.
The second 50th anniversary feature this issue is about
Cyclone Tracy that devastated Darwin at Christmas 1974.
In a series of five articles over 16 pages, our writers detail the role
amateur radio played in the immediate recovery following the cyclones
passing, along with experiences of riding it out, and of the
aftermath. The Cyclone Tracy feature is vividly illustrated, from the
front cover to throughout the articles, including scenes of violent
destruction.
Reader discretion is advised.
On technical matters, Lou Destefano VK3AQZ describes a smart,
Arduino-controlled RF signal generator, while Jim Sosnin VK3JST
has an update on his Track-and-hold VFO for older rigs.
And to comfort our cabal of contesters, we have the annual lift-out,
the 2025 Contest Calendar, printed in the magazines middle pages.
But, as usual, theres much, much more to read.
Amateur Radio magazine, Issue 6. More guts. Less gab.
Serving Australian amateurs since 1933.
Proudly produced and printed in Australia. Also available online.
Always published to a schedule, never random.
Im Roger Harrison VK2ZRH for WIA National News.
EDUCATION.
The ARRL Teachers Institute on Wireless Technology is growing next year, and a number of social media stars are coming together to help it happen. On Saturday, November 30, a live fundraiser telethon is set to take place on the Ham Radio Crash Course YouTube channel. Host Josh Nass, KI6NAZ, will be joined by several web-famous hams to talk radio and raise money. The proceeds benefit the ARRL Education and Technology Fund, which is what pays for the Teachers Institute (TI).
There is skin in the game. Several donors created a challenge with a $20,000 pledge. The Donor Challenge will be unlocked when others step up and give during this years telethon, said ARRL Director of Development Kevin Beal, K8EAL. It really shows the value hams place on inspiring and educating the next generation of radio amateurs. Theyre going to be the engineers that lead our world forward, and ham radio is a solid foundation for wireless technology, said Beal.

AUSTRALIANA
Defence has confirmed that it will use the Optus-X satellite launched
by SpaceX last Monday morning Australian time.
The satellite is an important element of Defences assured access to
space-enabled communications, an Australian Defence spokesperson said
in a statement to iTnews.
An Optus spokesperson said it had "procured a spacecraft on behalf of
another organisation. We respect the privacy of our customers and do
not provide comment on these matters."
Defence has been using Optus satellite services since 2003 and elected
back in 2022 to extend its arrangement with the telco through to 2034.
As iTnews reported at the time, the Optus satellite that Defence has
been using - C1 - was set to reach its end-of-life in 2027.
Its understood that the Optus-X satellite launch relates to the 2022
agreement and will enable services to continue through to 2034.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS is with thanks to ARRL,IRTS, NEWSLINE, NZART and
the World Wide sources of the WIA.
NEW ZEALAND
As reported earlier, NZART had been contacted by a member of the
French Amateur Radio community about participating in an event
recognizing the end of WWII.
While NZART Council acknowledges public opinion about this event, they
wish to make it very clear that NZART, as an association and community,
does not support war in any form.
In their monthly news broadcast it was said NZART will not take part in
the organization of this event, however, Council acknowledges it
to be a way to recognize the end of the war and serve as a form of
remembrance. Therefore they have approved the issue of the special
event call sign ZL 8 0MAY for a three month period.
Their item concluded with " NZART remains neutral regarding
participation extending beyond nations part of the Allied forces."

Congratulations to Jim Dalke, W7PB.
This broadcast engineer has been honoured by the Society of Broadcast
Engineers (SBE) with its Engineer of the Year Award, named for
Robert W. Flanders.
W7PB ( does the PB stand for PERSONAL BEST? ) is the only person to
have received the society's recognition twice. He first received the
award in 2014. The honour is presented to an SBE member whose career
is marked by excellence and who advances the mission of the SBE.
Having spent a lifetime at various broadcast radio and TV stations,
Jim continues to be active in the radio industry at age 85.
His professional involvement includes assisting the operations of
three AM stations in the Seattle area and over the years his
contributions and innovations have included, creation of a digital
weather display that helps TV weathercasters better show the National
Weather Service radar on the air, a feature that was later purchased by
some major-market TV stations.
Jim remains a fervent believer in the value and future of AM broadcast
radio, particularly to deliver alerts in times of emergencies.
Emergency response is something he knows well: A ham since the age of
14, Jim is active in the Washington State Emergency Management
Division.
US congressional commission has proposed a Manhattan Project-style
initiative to fund the development of AI systems that will be as
smart or smarter than humans, amid intensifying competition with
China over advanced technologies.
The bipartisan US-China Economic and Security Review Commission
stressed that public-private partnerships are key in advancing
artificial general intelligence, but did not give any specific
investment strategies as it released its annual report.
The Manhattan Project was a large-scale collaboration between the
US government and the private sector during World War Two that produced
the first atomic bombs.
"We've seen throughout history that countries that are first to exploit
periods of rapid technological change can often cause shifts in the
global balance of power," Jacob Helberg, a USCC commissioner and
senior advisor to software company Palantir's CEO, told Reuters.
"China is racing towards AGI ... It's critical that we take them
extremely seriously," Helberg added.

Imagine life on the road - and life on the air - rolled into one great
combination. One group of hams in the UK is doing just that.
The Facebook group started as a bit of fun among friends but the UK
Motorhome and Amateur Radio Group has grown into a community that
organiser Linda Mary Maude, GYLM, describes as "the perfect
combination of two hobbies."
She believes that amateur radio allows people to travel in one fashion
and a van or motorhome simply allows travel in another fashion.
The group began a little more than a year ago as a bit of fun between
radio friends and has taken off in popularity since then. The
advantages include being away from the electrical noises encountered
at home and, of course, the chance to meet other hams in person at
last. In fact, she said, there are even a few boat owners and campers
using tents who have joined the parade of camper vans, caravans and
motor homes.
Linda, G 0 YLM, would love to see the group become an international
one.
"If you enjoy radio and enjoy traveling, that's all we ask."

WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS - DIGITAL
Its with sadness that we noted the passing of Thomas E. Kurtz, on
November 12th.
He was co-inventor of the BASIC programming language back in the 1960s,
and though his creation may not receive the attention in 2024 that it
would have done in 1984, the legacy of his work lives on in the
generation of technologists who gained their first taste of computer
programming through it.
Origins of BASIC lie in the Dartmouth Timesharing System, like similar
timesharing operating systems of the day, designed to allow the
resources of a single computer to be shared across many terminals.
In this case the computer was at Dartmouth College, and BASIC was
designed to be a language with which software could be written by
average students who perhaps didnt have a computing background.
In the decade that followed it proved ideal for the new microcomputers,
and few were the home computers of the era which didnt boot into some
form of BASIC interpreter. Kurtz continued his work as a distinguished
academic and educator until his retirement in 1993, but throughout he
remained as the guiding hand of the language.
Should you ask a computer scientist their views on BASIC, youll
undoubtedly hear about its shortcomings, and no doubt mention will be
made of the GOTO statement and how it made larger projects very
difficult to write. This is all true, but at the same time it misses
the point of it being a readily understandable language for first-time
users of machines with very little in the way of resources. It was the
perfect programming start for a 1970s or 1980s beginner, and once its
limitations had been reached it provided the impetus for a move to
higher things.

AMSAT-VK Secretary - secretary@amsat-vk.org
AMSAT-SM, the Swedish group of AMSAT are reporting the recently
launched ASRTU-1 CubeSat's FM Transponder is active.
Satellite ASRTU-1 recently deployed to space with an FM transponder,
SSDV cameras, and a telemetry system. Initial images and telemetry
have been received by ground stations and the FM transponder continues
to be active.
The FM transponder's uplink of 145.850 MHz (67 Hz CTCSS tone required)
and a downlink of 435.400 MHz. After the repeater detects the end of
uplink, it will wait for 0.5s. If no new uplink in 0.5s, telemetry will
be sent. So make fast QSOs as the telemetry is less like to interrupt
you.
The satellite two cameras with an SSDV downlink for low resolution
images on 436.210 MHz, and a high speed downlink on 10460 MHz for
high resolution images.
ASRTU-1 is a 12U CubeSat designed through a collaboration between
Chinese and Russian students from the Harbin Institute of Technology.

Recently we ran the story of a ham radio station/club being set up in
an over 0's lifestyle village in the USA.
Now from the UK comes word a Merseyside society for former radio
officers has found a new home at the Nautilus retirement estate in
Mariners' Park.
The club meets every Friday morning and members transmit to amateur
radio enthusiasts around the UK and beyond. The equipment they use is
similar to the devices they used on board every day for work until the
radio officer role was phased out in the 1980s.
Some of the retired radio officers who live or now meet at Mariners'
Park have been members of the club since it was founded over a decade
ago as the Marine Radio Museum Society (Wirral). The call sign at that
time was GB2PLY, and the society transmitted from the historic warship
HMS Plymouth.
