About Peter Harding

As a young lad of 14, I would travel by a 1hr train, 20min Bus, and 30min walk from Gymea one of the Southern Suburbs of Sydneyto the Dural Transmitting site on a Sunday morning to assist in the weekly news broadcast, and to the many Dural Ham fests.

I studied under the late Cec Bardwell at the original Atchison St, St Leonard's WIA/NSW Head Office and lecture rooms, back when it was just a converted old house.

In approximately 1978, I completed my studies followed by the exams for the then Novice Licence at the Wollongong Radio Club rooms at the Wollongong Tafe College, whilst the Manager of Dick Smith Electronics at Wollongong. At that time I was a newly married man with 2 Children and living at Airds just outside of Campbelltown NSW, from my home QTH I was rebroadcasting the weekly news and HF call backs via the Dural 2 metre Repeater and out onto 80mtrs using my old Yaesu FT200 and the antennae was a G5RV , for some years before I moved to QLD, for many years I held the call as VK2NGK.

When we moved to QLD I changed my call to VK4JPH held that call for some time, I studied for my Full Call Theory and Morse, the theory we passed but not the Morse code, (strange as I learnt the Morse code as a member of the Royal Australian Signal Corps, 1962 to 1968 I think that when they discharged me they also discharged the code from my brain at the same time). I achieved my "J" call then to be able to hold VK4OD.

Radio Activities

When we moved to QLD in 1982, I assisted in the compilation of the Cassette tape of the VK4 QNEWS with Peter Jones VK4YAC, and I would rebroadcast it on the 2 and 80 meter bands, then when Graham Kemp and I put our hands up to act as temporary news Editor and I as the rebroadcast, this partnership was to be for a 2 year tenure, as it turns out both of us are now responsible for the now VK1 National Broadcast news files, as of January 2008 so we are into our 13th anniversary.
Since 2006 and up to and including 2012, when I took over the role as the WIA Remembrance Day Contest Manager.

During that period, I have been responsible for ensuring that the Annual Speech has been written and organised the Special Guest Speakers, Thanks to the Prime Minister of the day, The Govenor General for Australia, Special guest speakers from the Minister for Defence, Major Generals, Air Vice Marshalls, and Rank and File of the various Serving Service personell, and some of our former EX WWII servicemen and Women.
