Intruder Watch Update

Date : 27 / 07 / 2005
Author : Glen Dunstan - VK4DU

The New Zealand Intruder watch service has an estimated location for the wideband radar signal which has been wreaking havoc to the 40 and 80m bands of late. Bearings received from Sabah, Japan and New Zealand estimate the source of the interference to be in the vicinity of the Paracel Islands, off the Chinese coast. Further bearings are needed to confirm this location.

The WIA Intruder Watch service has had some requests to extend the scope of the service to our VHF bands. The two meter band, in particular, is often plagued by interference from long range cordless telephones, particularly in capital cities. Some of these illegal devices have even tuned up on the input frequencies of local repeaters - with predictable results. As VHF/UHF interference is localised in nature, the most effective way to deal with cases of non-amateur interference to VHF/UHF amateur frequencies is to pass the details to your local ACMA office. The ACMA will need to know the frequency of the interference, the duration and the nature.

Help safeguard our bands, become an intruder watcher today.Glenn Dunstan VK4DU, WIA National Intruder Watch coordinator
