BPL Rollout Slows in the UK

The Radio Society of Great Britain (RSGB) reports another development supporting the view that BPL may not really be a viable commercial alternative to other broadband delivery methods.

At a recent IEE meeting, a representative of Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) indicated that the company will not be undertaking any further rollout of BPL in the UK and is unlikely to undertake further investment in BPL technologies. The reasons given were the lack of progress on technical standards for BPL systems and the commercial position in relation to the provision of other broadband services such as ADSL.

The RSGB welcomed this announcement, saying that although they are aware that investment and developments in the technology elsewhere could change the situation. At this point it is not clear whether the planned trial of BPL by the Manx Electricity Authority on the Isle of Man will go ahead.
