As a once-off event, a Young Ham's Net was held Wednesday night (18 January) on the 80 metre band, resulting in a number of Foundation Licensees having their very first HF contact. Net controller was Bill Connelly VK3DOU, with his daughter Rachel VK3HRC and son Chris VK3TCC also in the shack.
About a dozen, mostly young people checked into the net. They included 14-year old Kate Adams who passed her Foundation Licence requirements only last weekend Keen to take part, Kate joined in as a second operator with the kind assistance of her brother, Barry VK3HBZ. The Foundation callsigns included VK3FIRE, VK3FRST, VK3FAWB and VK3FASH, with other young hams having either Standard of Advanced licences. The net participants chatted about their ham activities and it certainly helped boost the confidence of some of our newest hams. Invitations to join the net had also been extended to some youngsters in VK7, but propagation was not favourable.
The net also officially launched the Waffle Award being offered by Amateur Radio Victoria. Participants on the net logged their first contacts towards the Waffle.
