World War over Broadband Powerline Standards

Europe's Open PLC European Research Alliance (OPERA) formally announced development and approval of what it calls "the first open global specification for Powerline Communications (PLC) access," a specification based largely on technology from Spain's Design of Systems on Silicon S.A. (DS2).

However, the HomePlug Powerline Alliance is aiming at exactly the same world-standard designation, from exactly the same bodies. HomePlug's specification is based in large part on technology from Intellon. The standard being proposed by OPERA and the HomePlug specifications are incompatible.

The move sets the stage for an expected world war over broadband over powerline (BPL) standards that will pit the OPERA specification against those from the competing American HomePlug Powerline Alliance.
