On Tuesday 3rd October at approximately 06:50am local time, ABC presenter David Andersen will broadcast an interview with WIA Queensland Advisory Committee chairman Don Wilschefski, VK4BY.
David asked Don about the current popularity of amateur radio. Don advised that the new Foundation licence with a lower barrier to entry, has allowed many people to enjoy the amateur radio experience, than would previously have been able to. The licence still has a technical skill, and examination requirement, but much less than in the past. Computers are used in amateur radio. With digital communications, messages can be sent to other amateurs using the air waves. There is no confidentiality with amateur radio data communications, so everyone can see or hear what others are saying. APRS was also discussed with plans for using APRS location equipment in car rallies to assist with the location of cars through the rally sections.
