A 'battery power only' emergency communications exercise based at Miri in Sarawak Malaysia on Saturday September 14, will test a couple of remote sites, with message handling and disaster training. Johnny Tan 9M8DB of the Malaysian Amateur Radio Transmitters Society (MARTS) said that the day will be led by the Amateur Radio Club of Sarawak.

Communications will be between remote sites and a local operations centre. The suggested IARU Region 3 emergency centre-of-activity frequencies on the 40, 20 and 15 metre bands will be used, with appropriate training announcements. The day-time test will manage battery power, use telephony and PSK31, measure the Near Vertical Incidence Skywave propagation on 40m, while try out west-east paths across the country on 20m and 15m.

Johnny 9M8DB said evaluations will be made of the remote stations including their setups, antennas and how orderly they operate. He said the aim of the exercise is to train local radio amateurs in message handling routines, develop their skills, adaptability and resourcefulness.
