Interstate cooperation between amateur radio emergency communications volunteers was on display this weekend as WICEN NSW and WICEN Western Australia worked together to support Dementia Australia's final Memory Walk & Jog event for 2026 at Burswood Park in Perth.
The event will see VK6 WICEN operators providing on-ground communications support using a portable repeater system and handheld radios supplied by WICEN NSW. The collaboration highlights the strong spirit of cooperation that exists between WICEN groups across Australia, with equipment, expertise and volunteer resources being shared to support community events wherever they are needed. While this marks the final Memory Walk & Jog for 2026, the popular series is expected to return in early 2027.
The partnership demonstrates how amateur radio volunteers continue to provide reliable communications solutions for community organisations while building valuable operational experience and strengthening relationships between emergency communications groups nationwide. Whether supporting local events or working together across state borders, WICEN volunteers remain committed to serving their communities through practical communications support.
Coinciding with the Perth event, WICEN NSW also conducted its regular third-Sunday HF check-in net on or near the IARU Region 3 Emergency Operations frequency of 7110 kHz LSB. The monthly net regularly attracts stations from across eastern Australia and provides an important opportunity for operators to maintain skills, test equipment and strengthen emergency communications capability.
The successful cooperation between VK2 and VK6 volunteers serves as a reminder that while Australia's amateur radio community may be separated by thousands of kilometres, it remains connected by a shared commitment to public service, technical excellence and supporting communities in times of need.
