So far more than 430 have made online entries are already counted towards this year’s grand tally for the International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend. There’s been improvements this year have been in Australia, Chile, Portugal, South Africa and the USA, while generally Europe has been lower than previous. Notable by their absence so far are those from Alaska, China, Cuba, Hawaii, Japan, Taiwan and Uruguay.
The event came into being from the Scottish Northern Lighthouses Award Weekend first held in 1994 and has grown in statue ever since. The basic objective of the fun event is to promote awareness of lighthouses and lightships and their need for preservation, and to promote amateur radio and to foster International goodwill.
It’s not too late to enter and activate one this weekend. Check out the latest on the website illw.net which has access to an online registration form for August the 20th and 21st, and there’s Facebook too.
